Macular Degeneration Symptoms

Macular degeneration causes more blindness in older Americans each year than any other eye disorder. Macular degeneration consists of many easily recognizable symptoms in patients and develops gradually. Primary symptoms include experiencing a blurred or dark area in the center of the visual field. Other more advanced symptoms include increasing need for bright lights while reading or trouble adjusting focus of the eye in dim lighting. Other symptoms include blurred vision of straight lines, trouble reading or failure to distinguish small details. If individuals recognize symptoms of this disorder in themselves or others, it is wise to schedule a necessary eye exam with a trained ophthalmologist immediately. Macular degeneration carries no cure, but regular eye exams may slow progression.
